THIS was the scene where a £2,000 clear-up was undertaken due to fly tipping.

The council shared a photograph of the mess left near to Pennington Square in Leigh.

A clear-up was arranged by the local authority to the cost of £2,000.

A statement from the council: "We know how much our residents love our town and its natural environment that’s why it’s sad to report illegal fly-tips like this one near Pennington Square in Leigh.

"Not only do acts like this spoil our town for everyone else, but its removal comes at the cost to the Wigan Borough taxpayer. The clearing of this fly-tip is estimated to have cost £2,000.

"While our team are following a number of lines of enquiry, it is believed that the waste has been dumped by illegal waste carriers who offer services on social media posing as reputable waste removal services."

It added: "Do not be tempted to use people online who offer to take your rubbish for you and have no waste carriers licence - anyone found to do so will also be culpable.

"The Environment Enforcement Team want to remind all residents that you should only give your waste to a registered waste carrier. We would ask can residents check that a waste carrier is registered on the Environment Agency's website or call them on 08708 506 506.

"We would encourage residents to be our eyes and ears in the fight against fly-tipping so anyone with any information is asked to contact us in confidence via the Report It app."
