COLLEAGUES at East Lancashire branches of Lloyds Bank, including staff in Accrington, more than trebled the fundraising target they set themselves when they pledged to run, walk and cycle the equivalent distance between Blackburn and Las Vegas to help Rosemere Cancer Foundation.

They spent last October depositing 5,140 miles into a challenge account, which co-ordinator and Accrington branch manager Katrina McCormick hoped would raise at least £2,000 for the charity but which brought in an amazing £7,664.71 that with Gift Aid will add up to a donation of £9,088.68.

Katrina said: “On behalf of all of us who took part in the mileage challenge, I would like to thank family, friends, colleagues and customers who have so generously supported us. The total we raised has blown us away. It’s far more than we ever imagined we could raise and goes some way to show the esteem in which our two friends and colleagues Jayne Horsfield and Duncan Ferguson are held.”

The challenge was organised as a show of support for Blackburn branch manager Jayne, who formerly worked at Lloyds Accrington, and senior bank manager Duncan Ferguson, who oversees the East Lancashire pool. Both have been undergoing treatment for cancer.

Katrina explained: “We are a close team and in normal circumstances, we would have ensured Jayne and Duncan had lots of visits to show our love and support. Obviously, the coronavirus pandemic meant this couldn’t happen and we were struggling how to help when we came up with the idea of a charity challenge. Both Jayne and Duncan nominated Rosemere Cancer Foundation for support.”

Rosemere Cancer Foundation works to bring world class cancer treatments and services to cancer patients from throughout Lancashire and South Cumbria being treated at Rosemere Cancer Centre, the region’s specialist cancer treatment and radiotherapy centre at the Royal Preston Hospital, and at another eight local hospital cancer units across the two counties, including those at Burnley General Teaching and the Royal Blackburn Hospitals.

The charity funds cutting edge equipment, research, training and other cancer services that are beyond limited NHS resources. For further information on its work, including how to make a donation, visit www.rosemere.org.uk
