I read your paper this morning where it was reported that Greater Manchester Police carried out a series of speed enforcement checks in the Heaton, Halliwell and Doffcocker area.

I am afraid to say….it is too little too late.

A friend of mine wrote to Greater Manchester Police several times this year and several times prior to the pandemic. Each time he reported either speeding cars in the area or drug dealing. He was ignored.

The most recent report was prompted by a huge response from residents on a local Facebook group where people complained about the reckless speeding in this area.

Again he was completely ignored but this time decided to file a complaint against Greater Manchester Police for failing to acknowledge reported crimes in the area.

Surprisingly, this provoked a response from GMP but his complaint was sadly only met with a condescending tone by the sergeant who replied.

It is a tragedy that it takes the needless death of a member of the community for GMP to take some action and I sincerely hope that this morning’s enforcement checks were not a PR exercise and that the police will escalate enforcement in the area.

Otherwise, more deaths will sadly follow and residents will continue to live on streets that have become lawless.
