A BID to build houses on a golf club would lead to a ‘flood of homes coming to Horwich’, say a residents leader.

Northstone, part of Peel Group, has lodged a third plan to develop at Horwich Golf Club, proposing 150 houses.

Two previous applications have been unsuccessful, with a public objections leading to planners rejecting a far bigger plan for 276 homes in January.

That application followed a planning inquiry into an original 300 properties plan, where a government inspector said the plans were unacceptable.

Earlier this year, throwing out a second bid, councillors ruled it would be inappropriate for the protected site, raising traffic concerns.

Northstone is appealing that decision but has also drawn up the present scaled down plans. The matter is further complicated by the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework (GMSF), which is set to designate the land as green belt.

Malcolm Harrison, chairman of Stocks Residents’ Association (SRA), hopes planners bear in mind Horwich Locoworks plan could deliver 1,700 homes locally.

He welcomed the GMSF plan but has concerns about the council's golf club plans consultation.

He said: "Many have been disadvantaged in hearing about the application and in making objections. Many vulnerable who are shielding simply cannot get out and register their objections."
