A YOUNG MATHS prodigy is doing his bit to help support the NHS by raising money with an incredible challenge.

Kyden Waite from Lancaster will be raising money for NHS Charities together by taking a sponsored GCSE exam- at just eleven years old!

Completing GCSE exams can be one of the most daunting tasks in a young person’s life, but for Kyden this is a chance to do what he loves and help others in the process.

Dad Janik Waite said: “Kyden has shown an in depth understanding of everything mathematical from a young age.

“It was obvious by year three in school that he was so far ahead of his peers that he needed a special challenge to maintain his interest.”

He added: “Maths has always been a passion of his, and he just loves a good test.

“He is hoping to attain a grade 7 - 9, which is quite an achievement even for most 16-year-old students.”

For Kyden this is a cause that is extremely close to his heart, his sight having been saved at a young age by the NHS and its staff.

Mr Waite said: “Kyden arrived in this world with bilateral congenital cataracts and would have been left blind without the expertise of the NHS staff at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital

“Kyden has undergone numerous operations, the first of which was at just 10 weeks old. His cataracts had to be removed and artificial lenes implanted in his eyes.

“Complications led to secondary conditions such as glaucoma, which required a microscopic drainage needle permanently inserted in his eye to allow excess pressure to drain into a reservoir located behind his eyeball.”

As such Kyden now hopes to use his incredible maths skills to help others in similar positions and to support the NHS at a time when the service needs it most.

His exam will be taking place in the first week of November.
