PUPILS at Bury Grammar School have so far raised more than £18,000 for Bury Hospice after choosing it as their Charity of the Year 2020.

Bury Grammar School raises thousands of pounds every year for charity.

Devin Cassidy, Headmaster and Vice Principal, said: “We are delighted to be working with, and raising funds for, Bury Hospice as we celebrate our 450th anniversary. All our fundraising in 2020 has been going to Bury Hospice, an organisation that cares for local people and their families, with life limiting illnesses.

“We hold several fundraising events throughout the year – instilling the values of charity and volunteering are an important element of life at Bury Grammar School where children are encouraged to do all they can.”

Their fundraising activities have included a 450 Community Challenge where pupils, staff, parents and alumni collectively run or walked 450 miles by their Founders Day on May 7. They donated £1 for every mile they run or walked in a daily session and raised over £2,700.

They also recently staged a non-uniform day where pupils pitched in so they could go to school in their own clothes and raised more than four times their fundraising target, bringing in a staggering £4,258.

Rachel Wallace, Head of Marketing, Fundraising and Communications, said: “Bury Hospice has developed an excellent partnership with Bury Grammar School. To have young people with their creativity, energy and passion on board is fantastic.

"This is an incredibly exciting time for us as we are working together on this year’s annual Light up a Life remembrance service in December, and this follows a year of inspirational fundraising. We are looking forward to seeing what Bury Grammar School’s youngsters have in store for us during our 30th anniversary year in 2021.”
