TRIBUTES have been flooding in following the death of Mellor’s last full-time vicar.
Reverend John Peter Hudson passed away on October 19, age 78.

Mr Hudson was the vicar at St Mary’s the Virgin for 24 years and was a well-loved man.

The father-of-five will be remembered by thousands in the community with whom he shared many sacred moments.

Mr Hudson leaves behind his wife Carol, children and grandchildren.

His children Penny, David, Andrew, Christopher and Jonathan paid tribute to their dad.

Christopher said: “Dad was a husband, a father, a grandfather. He as a clergyman, a padre, a war hero, a listener, a speaker, a seer. He was one of life’s true achievers. A great man.

“For those that met him, he was an unforgettable character. Strong-willed and strong-headed, he was fiercely protective of his family, his friends and those close to him.

“He was a genuinely kind and generous father who constantly looked out for his kids. He will be deeply missed.”

Following his battle with cancer Mr Hudson’s family requested any donations to be sent to St John’s Hospice, Lancaster.

Hundreds of tributes were left online from those growing up in Mellor, children - now adults who have fond memories of the vicar.

They said Mr Hudson was a friend and mentor to many in the village and was a good man.

Kay Gibson wrote: “He was an amazing man. I have very fond memories of him from school, church and the laughs he brought during confirmation classes.

“He was at the centre of our little community. He was such a family man and was so proud of his children.”

Gwen Eccles said: “A truly lovely man.

“My brother’s former naval padre, the man who christened both me and my youngest and with great faith and humour saw me through my confirmation.

“He was a thoroughly lovely human being.”
