COUNCIL bosses in Bury have announced they will be providing food vouchers for nearly 8,000 children over the half-term holiday next week - in the wake of football star Marcus Rashford's campaign.

Plans by Labour to back Rashford's school holidays packed lunch drive in the House of Commons were defeated this week.

But Bury Council has now unveiled a £120,000 scheme to meet that obligation for the upcoming break.

Council officials say the £15 vouchers will be handed out from Monday - with the families of 2,000 vulnerable youngsters being contacted directly.

Those currently qualifying for free school meals are being urged to call 0161 253 5858 for more details regarding the scheme.

Cllr Tamoor Tariq, cabinet member for children, young people and skills, said: “We’ve all seen Marcus Rashford’s campaign and I and my colleagues are equally concerned about children going hungry in this borough.

“Whether at school or at home, they need a square meal and the voucher scheme will make sure that almost 8,000 children will get the food they need over the holiday.

“It’s an extension of the packed lunches we provided at the start of lockdown and the food parcels we’re providing now for those who are self-isolating and away from school.

“Times are tough for many right now and we hope that this will help keep our young people healthy and their parents and carers supported.”

The parliamentary vote saw Bury North MP James Daly vote against the Rashford proposal and Christian Wakeford not vote.

It remains unclear whether the funding for the new initiative comes from past coronavirus support funding or an existing budget or reserve.
