MORE than 1,000 Lancashire pubs have been affected as tier three measures were introduced on Saturday.

Across Lancashire, pubs and bars had to call last orders on Friday night unless they were able to operate as a restaurant, in line with new coronavirus guidelines.

Tier three measures affect 1,127 pubs in Lancashire, 1,031 pubs within the Liverpool City Region, and could affect a further 1,809 across Greater Manchester, according to property adviser Altus Group.

Lancashire and Liverpool already have tier three measures imposed with Greater Manchester to follow as the same rules will be introduced on Friday after Manchester leaders and the government were unable to come to an agreement.

At the beginning of October there were 37,616 pubs in England, excluding wine bars, meaning one in 10 of all English pubs will be impacted, Altus Group said.

A further 12,500 pubs in tier two regions are also affected by the restrictions which only allow households to socialise outside, according to Government data.

Robert Hayton, head of property tax at Altus Group, said: "Whilst pubs in England are currently receiving a £728.42 million business rates holiday, £514.88 million of grant support received during the national lockdown between March and July has now largely been spent.

"Pubs need a discerning targeted support package, not just accessible for those mandated to close, as well as given assurances that the package will be in place for the foreseeable future."

Emma McClarkin, Chief Executive of the British Beer & Pub Association, said: "Tier three restrictions will have a devastating impact on pubs, brewers and their wider supply chain in Lancashire unless a proper support package is available to all businesses impacted.

“This will completely kill the business model of up to 400 pubs. The remaining 800 pubs who don’t serve substantial meals will be forced to close completely.

"The survival of all pubs in either of these categories is hanging dangerously in the balance.”
