BORIS Johnson will be holding a press conference at 5pm to talk about plans to put some areas, including Manchester under tighter restrictions.
It is believed that Greater Manchester could be forced into a lockdown after talks which have lasted ten days between the government and Mayor Andy Burnham have still not reached an conclusion.
Lancashire leaders made an agreement with government on Friday, putting the county into a tier three lockdown which started at 12.01am the following day.
The immediate nature of the lockdown came as a shock to many as areas such as Liverpool and London were given a two-day transition period before being moved to a higher tier.
Currently, Manchester is in the ‘high’ tier of lockdown, banning household mixing indoors, whilst the rule of six still applies outdoors.
A tier three lockdown which is expected to be announced tonight will put Greater Manchester in the ‘very high’ bracket with Lancashire and Liverpool.
In the third tier, social mixing is banned both indoors and in private gardens, while pubs and bars will be told to close unless they can operate as a restaurant.
Last night, Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick issued Mr Burnham an ultimatum asking the mayor to agree to further restrictions by midday today.
Boris Johnson will be joined by deputy chief medical officer Jonathan van Tam and NHS Director Stephen Powis.
