AN East Lancashire theatre has received a new celebrity boost to its appeal for cash to secure its future after coronavirus.

Chris Difford, from 1970s band Squeeze, is to play a virtual concert for Darwen Library Theatre.

It follows Bolton comedian Paddy McGuinness giving its #SaveOurTheatres Crowdfunder campaign £1,000 to take it over its initial £3,000 target.

Now the theatre’s campaign has broken its second £4,000 milestone and booked the ‘New Wave’ rock star for a future digital rock and roll fundraiser.

The appeal is part of a national initiative launched by Theatres Trust to prevent their permanent closure.

Rebecca Weaver, marketing manager for at Darwen Library Theatre and Blackburn’s King George’s Hall said: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the support from the local community and beyond.

“We were thrilled to receive support from comedians Justin Moorhouse and Paddy McGuinness, who both got behind the campaign, having previously performed at the theatre.

“More exciting news came today, when Chris Difford, famous for solo work and partnerships with Glenn Tilbrook and band Squeeze, offered to perform a unique virtual concert for Darwen Library Theatre to help raise more funds. Details of the event will be available on the theatre’s website and social media very soon.”

Cllr Damian Talbot, Blackburn with Darwen Council’s culture boss, said: “The success of this campaign for Darwen Library Theatre shows just how much the theatre is valued by the whole community.

“Plans are already in place to bring performances back to the theatre next month.”
