A CAR crashed into a traffic island in Bury last night, leaving a road closed in both directions.

Emergency services attended the incident on Bury and Bolton Road at around 11.30pm.

It is not yet known how many people were involved in the incident, but the ambulance service did attend the scene.

The A58 Bury and Bolton road was closed by police at the junction of Watling Street in both directions.

Fire crews arrived at the scene to ensure it was made safe to the public.

Crew manager Doyle from Bury fire station said: "We were called at approximately 11.30pm. Just one vehicle was involved.

"They had crashed into a traffic island. By the time we arrived everyone was out of the vehicle and being dealt with by the ambulance service.

"The car was a Toyota Aygo and it was significantly damaged, I would say it was a write off."

Shortly before 2am today Transport for Greater Manchester announced that the road was fully reopened.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman added: "Shortly before 11:30pm on Saturday, September 26, police were called to reports that a car had collided with a barrier on Bolton Road in Bury."
