A LORRY driver hit two railway bridges in Walkden this morning causing delays to train services.

Network Rail warned passengers about delays on services between Wigan Wallgate and Salford Crescent after a lorry hit two railway bridges on Walkden Road near to the railway station at around 6.35am.

On Twitter, a Network Rail said the driver hit one railway bridge before driving off and hitting another one.

Following the incident, a Network Rail spokesman said: “At 6:36am two low railway bridges by Walkden station on Walkden Road were hit by a lorry.

"Trains were placed under a temporary speed limit for around an hour when our inspection of the bridges found no structural damage had been caused.

"As bridge strikes like this are entirely avoidable and cause long delays for rail passengers, we advise drivers to always know the size and height of their vehicles.”

Train operator Northern said on social media that delays were was set to last until 8am.

British Transport Police (BTP) were notified about the two collisions.

A BTP spokeswoman said: "We received a report of two bridge strikes in Walkden shortly after 8am.

"The bridges were fit for service and there was no requirement for police attendance.

"There have been no arrests."
