It’s national afternoon tea week next week, so what better time to sample the finest finger sandwiches and scones in Bolton.

There are some truly fantastic afternoon tea venues in the town and they each bring something unique to the traditional afternoon tea.

Poppins at Smithills

This quirky tea room is the ultimate place to go for an affordable afternoon tea- they even have options for vegans and children.

The Popping Indulgence Afternoon

This consists of and consists of dainty sandwiches, a “luxury” fruit scone, a slice of cake and a pot or loose leaf tea or coffee.

Poppins High Tea
Price: £13.45pp


Ideal for those who prefer savoury food, this high tea gives you a choice of Eggs Benedict, Eggs Royale or Eggs Florentine, served with a luxury fruit scone with clotted cream and strawberry jam, served with a pot of loose leaf tea or freshly brewed coffee.

Uncle Albert’s Splendid Tea
Price: £12.95pp

A traditional Ploughman's Lunch for one, served with a luxury fruit scone with clotted cream and strawberry jam- it comes with a pot of loose leaf tea or freshly brewed coffee.

Jane and Michael’s Afternoon Tea
Price: £4.95pp

Even the kids can enjoy an afternoon tea at Poppins.

This tea consists of finger sandwiches, a mini delight, fresh fruit, and a choice of hot chocolate, fruit cordial, or a Babyccino.

Poppins Tea Rooms, their sister tea room on Lee Lane, is currently not able to open as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Victoria Inn

Afternoon tea at Victoria Inn is £12.95 with a hot drink and £17.50 with a glass of prosecco.

It comes with a selection of sandwiches, cakes and yummy scones.

Victoria Inn seems to be a popular place to go for afternoon tea, with 4/5 stars on Trip Advisor.

One person wrote: “The afternoon tea is superb value for money- this is now going to be a regular treat for myself and friends.”

Emily Pilkington, manager of the Victoria Inn, said: "There’s always a friendly welcome at the Victoria Inn- our food is all homemade and fresh."

Lotties of Belmont

Afternoon tea here is priced at £15.95 per person- £19.95 if you want to swap your tea for prosecco.

The tea includes: a jam and cream scone, 3 delicious miniature cakes, a selection of sandwiches, a sausage roll and a slice of quiche.

Katrina Peak, general manager at Lotties, spoke to The Bolton News.

She said: "People should consider us as we try to use local produce where possible- our scones come from Hunters, a local bakery on Church Road.

"We also have fantastic views over Belmont and Winter Hill from our cafe to enjoy."

They are participating in the government's Eat Out to Help Out scheme and afternoon tea is included in this deal. 

It is available between 1pm-3pm every day and you have to book 48 hours in advance.
