IT’S hard to believe that these cobbles led into the centre of Blackburn.
Taken in 1966 the photograph shows the scooter rider on Astley Gate which effectively disappeared when the shopping centre was constructed.
Today from the same viewpoint you would pretty much be looking at the entrance to the Mall car park with the road turning off to the right with the Sun Inn on your right as it becomes Higher Church Street. Debenhams would be on your left with the pedestrian ramp giving access to the Mall.
On the right you can see a chip shop sign. Next door to that, out of shot, was the popular hardware store Little Sheffield and on the left is what is now the Chippery.
