Charlton Athletic have been relegated back to League One after a heavy final day defeat at champions Leeds.

The Addicks started the match hopeful of retaining their place in England's second tier, but were soundly beaten by four goals. Results in other games meant relegation for the south east London side after just one year in the Championship.

Leeds totally dominated throughout, and were two nil up by half time thanks to goals from Ben White and Stuart Dallas.

Substitutes Tyler Roberts and Jamie Shackleton rounded off the win, and Charlto's players and staf were pictured despondent at the final whislte.

Charlton, who have endured a torrid season off the pitch as well as on it, end the season in 23rd place, ahead only of Hull, with Barnsley rounding out the relegation spots.

However, due to Wigan Athletic's pending points deduction, it is likely they will replace Barnsley in 22nd position.

On the pitch, the Addicks made a strong start to their campaign following their promotion from League One last season.

But poor form between October 20 and January 31 saw them in trouble, and the side dropped

However, they won just once between 20 October and 31 January to drop into relegation trouble.

When the season was halted beacuse of coronavirus, with manager Lee Bowyer saying it would have been "ridiculous" if the season had been ended on a points-per-game basis.

But the Addicks ended up failing to win any of their last seven, not helped by the absence of top scorer Lyle Taylor, who opted not to sign a short-term extension to his deal.
