A UNIQUE new pet-friendly cafe and bakery is hoping to prove top dog as it prepares to open in Bury.

Paws for Coffee is set to open its doors in Tottington Road next month.

Owner and pet lover Karen Phillips says the coffee shop will aim to provide 'something completely different'.

She described it as a cafe for pooches and other pets 'where owners are welcome'.

Fresh dog treats and goodies will be freshly baked on site everyday — including 'pup cakes'.

Another speciality are doggie friendly versions of popular biscuits, such as custard creams, bourbon creams, Party Rings and Jammy Dodgers.

All the bakery's recipes have been created by Mrs Phillips and are organic, gluten free and grain free.

For owners there will be barista-made coffee, as well as freshly squeezed juice, light snacks and meals.

Mrs Phillips, from Tottington, said: "We are just delighted to bring to this new concept to the Bury area.

"It's a bit niche and there's nothing else like this around here.

"We hope that all the pet lovers will come down and join us."

Renovations are currently underway to ensure the cafe — which is located at the site of the former Taste of Thailand restaurant — is ready to welcome customers.

The interior of the coffee shop is being overhauled to have a 'rustic' feel, complete with reclaimed wood interiors and specially made chairs and counters from The Flux Club CIC in Salford.

When finished it will also have a play area for dogs, with toys and beds.

A grand opening is planned for between 12pm and 5pm on August 1, which will be attended by The Deputy Mayor and Mayoress of Bury.

People are invited to join the cafe for a glass of Prosecco and a bowl of Pawsecco or Bottom Sniffer dog beer for their furry friends.

Mrs Phillips said: "I know there are other coffee shops and cafes that say they are pet friendly, but when you go in with your dog you get eyes rolled at you, because some people don't like dogs.

"We are completely different. Paws for Coffee is a dog cafe where owners are also welcome."

If all goes well with the launch, she added that she may look at making the cafe in to a bistro in the evenings.

The coffee shop is a new venture for Mrs Phillips who recently left her job in the HR industry to pursue her passion for pets.

She owns four Bichon Frises and began pet treat baking a couple of years ago when her elderly pooch Buster began have trouble with his stomach.

Buster loved the snacks that Mrs Phillips made for him and so, after perfecting her recipes, she began advertising them for sale on Facebook as Buster and Friends Treats.

Her business blossomed, even as she juggled working full time, but like many she faced unexpected challenges when the coronavirus pandemic hit.

She then jumped at the opportunity to open a cafe when the premises became available in Tottington Road.
