A HUGE fire has been reported to be producing lots of toxic smoke.

Fire crews from Blackburn and Hyndburn are currently assisting with at a large fire at a car garage on Brookside Street, Oswaldtwistle.

The car garage is believed to be that of ACD Jeep and Chrysler Breakers.

Ten fire engines are said to be at the scene tackling the blaze and there are some road closures in place.

Lancashire Police are also there assisting in evacuating some residents from nearby properties and due to the large smoke plume, people in the vicinity are being advised to close their windows and doors as a precaution.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "The fire is affecting a single storey building approximately 15m by 20m.

"The fire is currently being tackled by four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus, two hose reels and two main jets, plus support from the ALP. The High Volume Pump (HVP) and aerial support unit are also en route."

Residents in the area say they have heard explosive noises near to the fire.

One said: "An employee was working on a veichle and petrol ignited in the side workshop."

A spokesman for the fire service said: "This incident is producing lots of toxic smoke, please avoid the area and if you live nearby keep your doors and windows closed."

Lancashire Fire tweeted: "We currently have 10 fire engines in attendance at a fire involving a commercial premises in Oswaldtwistle.

"Theres's a lot of smoke being produced and so anyone in the vicinity being affected by the smoke plume are advised to close their windows and doors as a precaution."
