Last Saturday (4th July), hairdressers across the UK were given the green light to open- much to the delight of people with overgrown roots and long hair.

For those who have been cutting and colouring their own hair in lockdown, a trip to the hairdressers was essential to fix their mistakes.

A Bolton hairdresser and barber spoke with Bolton News and talked about some of the worst lockdown haircuts they've seen this week- this is what they had to say.

'Her hair had turned out green, rather than blonde!'

Sally Nar works at Salon 44 in Bolton and said opening day went smoothly.

She added: “We’ve got so many loyal clients who have been in touch asking when we are reopening and how it will work after lockdown, so we’ve been working to keep everyone informed and safe."

However, Sally added that there have been “one or two clients” who got desperate during lockdown and attempted to transform their own hair- with disaterous results.

Sally explained: "One of our regulars used a box dye- which came out really badly- her hair had turned out green, rather than blonde!"

"She also had her boyfriend attempt a cut with scissors they have at home.

"The hair had been cut at different lengths and in some places it was slightly damaged."

However, staff at the Salon had prepared for this and knew exactly what to do.

Sally said: "She walked out of the salon feeling - and looking - like lockdown had never happened"

Sally added that there really isn't a replacement for a hairstylist and that “Hairdressing is harder than it looks".

She added: “In the end the reopening went very smoothly- I’m sure you can see the difference in the hair of Boltonians!”

'It’s been a laugh to see the different hairstyles that come through the door'

Salon 44 isn’t the only business to have seen some questionable hairstyles.

Connor Butterworth, owner of Conflix Barbers in Bolton, said he has had to fix some terrible fades in the last week.

He explained: “Some people walk through the door and I just think- what have you done to your hair?

“Some people have let it grow out- others have hacked away at it themselves.

“While it’s been hard starting up- it’s been a laugh to see the different hairstyles that come through the door”

Lockdown encouraged some of Connor's clients to be experimental with their hair while they were stuck indoors- he said one person dyed their hair bright orange during lockdown and another tried out a mullet hairstyle.

Connor has also encountered many clients over the last week who let their partners cut their hair for them.

“There had zig zag lines going everywhere,” he explained. “ They ask me ‘do you think the missus [sic] did a good job on my hair?’ I say yes to please them- but it didn't always look good.”

Connor talked discussed one client who hadn’t had his hair cut for two months before the barbers even went lockdown- he was booked in at the start of lockdown but his appointment had to be cancelled.

He explained: “It was near enough down to his shoulders.

“Funnily enough, he decided he actually wanted to keep the length and it just needed a bit of styling.”

If you’re in Bolton and desperate to get your hair seen to, then Conflix Barbers is taking bookings.
