WORK on the £2.4m transformation of a major Bolton junction is under way, with barriers in place around the area.
The left lane of Newport Street at the junction of Trinity Street is now closed to traffic, with work expected to continue until January 2021.
Once complete, the “innovative” Cycle Optimised Protected Signals Design (CYCLOPS) junction will be the second of its kind across the whole of Greater Manchester.
The scheme, which hopes to enhance cycling and pedestrian access around the town centre, will feature an “orbital cycle route”, offering bikes a dedicated space away from other road traffic.
Equipment for workers is currently packed into the closed rail replacement bus service station, while diversions are in place for pedestrians.
Cllr Stuart Haslam, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “Lockdown has caused a great deal of disruption, but I am delighted that the council has been able to deliver these vital projects thanks to the hard work of everyone involved.
“Whether travelling by bus, car, bike or on foot, I’m sure all residents will benefit from the vast improvements that are being made to our highways network during lockdown.
The project is being delivered by Bolton Council and Transport for Greater Manchester as part of the Salford Bolton Network Improvement Programme.
