A group of neighbours on a residential road came together to celebrate the work of the NHS and other key workers this bank holiday.

Residents of Astley Road, Harwood, decorated their street and set-up games that they could enjoy together from the comfort of their front drive whilst — maintaining social distancing.

Before the event, one resident of Astley Road, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "Bunting has been erected and houses decorated to celebrate the work they (key/NHS workers) are doing and to raise the spirits of the neighbourhood during these unprecedented times."

The event was planned after the street held a successful get together on VE day, with a variety of games set-up for all to enjoy all along the road.

A microphone and speaker were set up for the residents to play bingo and do a quiz together, with other games such as play your cards right "involved in the afternoon of fun".

The resident continued: "Following a successful VE 75 celebration earlier this month the neighbours decided that it would be a great idea to let their hair down and celebrate the bank holiday.

"It's amazing how people have come together and have met new friends and neighbours and re-joined with old friends. The Astley Road community are really coming together."

Another resident, Karen Wood, added: "It was a fantastic event which involved the whole street, from the youngest to the very oldest resident.

"Everyone sitting in their own front gardens, meant that we were socially distancing whilst being able to join in the fun.

"We all took part in several quizzes, prizes being given for the best team name and the most colourful outfit.

"Residents had donated a variety of prizes which were won in the raffle and other games. We finally finished with dancing to Agadoo and The Macarena.

"In an attempt to make the best of this current situation with Covid 19, we the residents of Astley Road, have worked hard on our mental health and well-being.

"We are a strong team as a result, and are already planning our next event."

Street parties such as this have been a common feature of lockdown as people connect with their neighbours, with families unable to leave their home, with this trend only likely to continue as lockdown restrictions are eased.
