PUPILS and staff at a Radcliffe school have their eyes set on New York as they 'travel the globe' as part of unique lockdown fitness challenge.
Classes at Radcliffe Primary School have been getting active by joining a "Clocking up the Km challenge" set up by the school's PE lead, Anna Morris.
Each day the youngsters and school staff have been asked to track the kilometres they cover during their daily exercise — whether by running, walking, cycling, riding their scooters, or any other way they get out and about.
The challenge was created to boost physical and mental wellbeing, and has proven a hit, with lots of families now participating, Mrs Morris said.
She added: "This was a little idea I had whilst out for my once-a-day exercise.
"As a PE lead, I know how important physical activity is for our children, but also the benefits it brings to their mental wellbeing.
"Giving the children and their families another focus away from their home-schooling — which we all know can be very stressful — allows them time to switch off, regroup, and share some quality time together."
The challenge has inspired some friendly competition as every week each class's total distance is announced in an online School Celebration Assembly.
As the kilometres begin to add up the pupils and staff have been able to track their way around the world.
In the first week they collectively travelled the distance to Dunkirk, France, and by the second week they had hit Lisbon, Portugal.
Last week, having clocked up almost 3,000 km, they 'reached' Moscow, Russia.
Mrs Morris is now aiming for the school to chalk up the equivalent of enough kilometres to reach New York City, USA.
Alyson Walsh, headteacher at Radcliffe Primary School, said: "The teachers have been working so incredibly hard to continually organise and set a range of engaging home learning activities.
"This was another fantastic idea that our children, families and staff have 'ran with' with and thoroughly enjoyed doing.
"There's even been a bit of healthy competition too.
"I am sure everyone will keep clocking up the kilometres and it'll be really interesting to see in the world where we get to."
