THE current coronavirus lockdown has seen the call go out for radio operators which reminded us of this photographe from 1950 when radio enthusiasts from Bolton were quick to respondto a challenge from the Incorporated Radio Society of Great Britain.
They were one of 137 groups around the country to set up a portable transmission station - effectively a tent in a field - at Top-o’th-Heights Farm, Morris Green.
The groups had 24-hours to contact as many other ‘radio hams’ as possible gaining points for every group they got in touch with.
Pictured are John Wilde - G3WG to his radio contacts - Gerry Openshaw who operated one of the two transmitters during the night and Harry Rothwell who was the clerk for the 24-hour challenge.
