THE planned new £350million Metrolink extension to Trafford Park will open tomorrow as intended, it has been confirmed, despite coronavirus travel restrictions.

Public transport across Greater Manchester has taken a serious hit as the Covid-19 outbreak takes a more decisive grip on the public's health.

And Metrolink services have been reduced to a Sunday schedule, with trams only running every 12 minutes, as people are advised to avoid everything except essential journeys.

But the additional 5.5km of track and six additional stops are set to enter service from Sunday, connecting the Trafford Centre and Manchester city centre, as planned.

A Metrolink spokesman said: "The new Trafford Park Line will open tomorrow as planned.

"This is to help critical workers and those who do need to travel for essential reasons like medical appointments.

"We'd like to reassure you that there is a rigorous cleaning regime in place."
