A PROLIFIC shoplifter and a store security guard chatted amicably for an hour while they waited for the police to arrive.

Blackburn magistrates heard Samantha Angela Clarke gave the other woman a hug before she left the store.

“That is the kind of person she is,” said Mark Williams, defending.

“She is not a nasty person and only offends to fund her alcohol addiction.”

Clarke, 46, of Exeter Street, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to stealing jewellery worth £115 from Next.

She was sentenced to eight weeks in prison suspended for 12 months. and ordered to pay £122 victim surcharge.

Tracy Yates, prosecuting, said the loss prevention officer saw Clarke enter the shop and watched as she placed items in a foil-lined bag.

She was detained as she left the store and taken to the office to wait for the police.

When she was interviewed Clarke said she was trying to raise money to buy drink.

Mr Williams said Clarke was very open and honest about the position she was in.

“She is currently subject to a community order with an alcohol treatment requirement and she is trying to deal with her problem,” said Mr Williams.

“She said the store detective who detained her was a very nice lady.”

He said Clarke appreciated that each time she committed an offence she put herself one step closer to custody.

“She is a thoroughly nice person to deal with but she needs to deal with the evils of alcohol,” said Mr Williams.
