COUNCIL tax bills for a borough’s hard-up residents are set to fall.
Low-income households in Burnley will save £13.04 a year under the change being recommended.
The council’s executive meeting on Monday is set to approve an enhancement of the council tax support scheme in the borough.
Currently the full council tax bill for a Band A terraced property with two residents is £1,278.50.
Where the the occupiers are of working age and on income support this reduces to £223.74 but under the new proposals that would fall to £210.70 in 2020/21 assuming a three per cent increase in overall council tax bills.
Their bill is expected to fall further to £203.46 in 2021/2022.
Cllr Gordon Birtwistle, Burnley Council’s resources boss, said: “This is aimed at providing additional support to some of the poorest people and most vulnerable families in our borough.”
Cllr Mark Townsend, leader of the Labour opposition group, said: “It is good news. The council needs to play its part in reducing poverty.”
