The STAR of the latest Conservative advert has encouraged those who doubt his authenticity to meet him over a pint.

David Barnard, 33, appeared in the most recent party political broadcast talking about why he switched his vote at the last election, being surprised by Boris Johnson appearing from behind a screen halfway through the ad.

Since the video has been aired, people have taken to social media to doubt that David is who he says he, with some people claiming that he was actually called Tarquin from Clapham.

David said: "It's strange thinking that so many people can doubt that I'm a real person. I think it would be better if people spoke face to face because you lose so many things important to conversation over a screen.

"My brother, who has had a Twitter account for four years, is being labelled as a fake too, although a few people have apologised for accusing us of being fake after speaking to me.

"If you're not convinced then come and have a pint – if you're that sure I'm not real then get in touch and come and chat with me."

People have also raised suspicion about the flat cap David was seen wearing in the ad, but he has assured The Bolton News that it really does belong to him.

The cap was a present from his father after David said he liked the one his dad wears, earning him a similar cap for Christmas.

David, who has worked repairing highways for the last three years, was put forward for the interview by Stuart, a friend and Conservative party member.

The party paid for his travel and put him up in a hotel, although David believed that he would be one of 15 people filmed, not the only one.

He said he had no idea that the Prime Minister would join him on set, but did notice something a little odd before filming started.

He added: "I was outside having a cigarette and I saw four police bikes circle the building and I thought 'that's a bit strange' but I thought nothing else of it.

"It was absolutely crazy to meet Boris, I thought of so many thing that I wanted to say to him afterwards and I was really worried that I'd look daft on the clip because my mind just went blank from the shock of seeing him.

"We chatted for 15 minutes after filming finished and he wished me well on my wedding and I showed him some pictures of my dog. He was a great guy and it was nice to put Bolton on the map."

David currently lives in Egerton and has lived in Bolton for his whole life, growing up in Kearsley.

His family have been very supportive of him despite their political differences, although his fiancee hasn't been happy about how much time he's spent on Twitter.

"I had to take a night off, she was getting quite annoyed at how much I was using it - I can see how addictive it can get.

"I've been brought up that there's a lot of different things that make up a person and my parents can see that changing my vote hasn't changed me."
