A SUSPECTED fire at Tesco Superstore in Bury has been labelled "a mystery".
Shoppers and staff were evacuated from the large supermarket at Woodfield Retail Park last night after a cloud of smoke fille the store.
Fire crews from Bury, Whitefield and Heywood were called to the scene at about 10.45pm.
Steve Wilcock, watch manager at Bury fire station, said: "Someone had broken the red fire call point after they smelt burning.
"Everyone was evacuated.
"When we arrived, there was a cloud of smoke in the atmosphere that covered the main shop floor.
"We ventilated the building and gradually the smoke cleared.
"The store is more than 120m x 100m. We carried out a thorough search to try and establish the cause. We used thermal imaging scanners to conduct a full survey of the building, including in the roof space.
"We did not find the origin. It was a bit of a mystery."
Crews were in attendance for about one hour and 15 minutes.
