TREE surgeon Andrew Dewhurst from Colne was called in to fell this diseased tree at Wilson Playing Field, Clayton-le-Moors, in 1990.
It may have been a massive tree but you can see from the picture that the rot had begun to take hold and there were fears that in high winds it could easily topple over.
A number of trees surrounding the playing field, which is home to Hyndburn Athletic Club, were cut down as part of a major ‘tidy-up’ operation in the woodland there.
To this day a number of larger trees are standing shielding the running track from the main road.
