MORE than 5,000 people turned out to enjoy Christmas festivities in Colne.

An annual torchlight parade, led by Father Christmas, was the highlight of the 2019 Christmas gathering.

Funfair rides, face painting and donkey rides were on offer from Albert Road to Market Street. The illuminations flickered into life as the sleigh procession made its way up the hill to Hartley Square.

Colin Hill, Colne Town Council’s interim clerk, said: “It was unbelievable how many people supported the event, with the live music, an amazing selection of food and market stalls, Father Christmas and the firework finale, which all made it a special event for Colne residents and visitors alike."

Barnoldswick Brass Band, Darwen Brass Band, and Burnley Silver Alliance all provided a musical accompaniment and there were performances from Malkin Morris and the Roughlee Ruffians, Oakenhoof Clog Dancers and Helen Green’s Dance Academy.

Seventeen businesses took part in a festive window competition, which was won by Chosen by Jessica, with The Glass Box and Molly Mae’s in second and third place.

Naomi Crewe, the town council’s events manager, added: “Once again it was a brilliant event, I just want to thank all those that took part in the event from market traders to performers and everyone that helped to make it a smooth event from behind the scenes.”
