THERE is an adorable new addition to one of Bolton’s most popular farms.

A miniature Shetland pony is the latest little ball of fur to be welcomed to Smithills Open Farm, born just one week ago to new pony parents, aptly named Dinky and Stuart Little.

Thrilled farmer Carl Grimshaw said the arrival was unexpected, only discovering that the foal would be on the way just two months ago.

He said: “This is the first Shetland foal we have ever had born at the farm — that’s the most exciting thing for us.

“It was only about two months ago that we thought Dinky might be pregnant. She’s not a fat pony at all, her tummy just seemed really big.”

“They’re not normally born this late in the year, it’s a little bit later than we would have wanted but it’s all going so well. Mum and baby are bonding this week and are both really healthy.”

The pony has already been showered in love and affection.

Mr Grimshaw said: “She’s just a little fluff ball. We can’t believe how small she is, she’s so tiny the pictures don’t do it justice.”

The little pony will be going into the pets corner area of the farm this weekend, but the farm have not yet named her.

Mr Grimshaw said: “We don’t have a name yet. I’m going to run a competition on Facebook to pick a new name.

“Everybody who has seen her has gone completely mad over her, they absolutely love her like we do.”

The farmer is welcoming suggestions, having already received some contenders from animal lovers.

Just one week after arriving at the farm, the little foal is showing her personality as she gets used to being around humans.

Mr Grimshaw said: “She’s so strong and quick already, she’s a pocket rocket. We want her to get as used to human interaction as possible.”

Visit Smithills Open Farm on Facebook to send your name suggestions. Pets corner times do change throughout the year but at weekends they are usually at 10.30am, 11.30am, 12.30pm, 1.30pm, 2.30pm, 3.30pm.
