Boycott Morrisons was one of the top trends across the UK yesterday after the supermarket sparked outrage from many social media users.

The calls to boycott the store came after footage alleged to show a Brexit Party campaigner being pushed away from the store by a security guard.

Warning this video contains strong language

The video shows a campaigner, who is carrying Brexit Party leaflets and wearing a badge, being pushed away from the Morrisons store entrance when attempting to enter. The campaigner says: “I have a right to have a cup of tea in your store.”

Following the footage dropping online, many called for a boycott of the store with Brexit supporters stating that the security guards had been heavy-handed.

Brexit Party candidate Michelle Dewberry retweeted the video writing: “Absolute disgrace Morrisons. Campaigning all day is tiring. Everyone is entitled to a rest. How dare you assault/ban him in this way?

"I’m a Brexit Party candidate. Am I to assume my team & I are also not welcome in your stores? What about Brexit backing customers?”

Morrisons confirmed they were looking into the incident.

Many thought the alleged incident happened in Bolton, but it's understood the alleged incident actually related to a store in Denton.

Responding to the criticism from Brexit supporters online the supermarket commented: "Customers in-store complained about the man in the video as he was forcing leaflets onto them. Electioneering doesn't take place in our stores. He was asked to leave but wouldn't. The security guard, who is from a security company over-reacted and we are dealing with this."

While many claimed the video had been staged, pro-remainers also took to social media to say they would be shopping at Morrisons more due to their stance, resulting in the trending of the hashtag #BoycottMorrisons.

One user wrote: "So the hashtag #BoycottMorrisons has emerged because Morrisons ejected a rabid Brexiteer from their store for forcing leaflets into people’s hands and being a general racist arsehole. Shopping there tomorrow with a smile on my face"
