ANGRY residents have accused a council of ignoring concerns about speeding on a busy road.

People living on Lammack Road, Blackburn, have complained about cars flying down the stretch at speeds of up to 70mph for months.

They raised their fears with the Lancashire Telegraph last month and called for traffic calming measures, such as speed humps, to be installed on the road.

Now residents have claimed that council bosses have disregarded their concerns, which they fear could worsen with extra traffic from a planned new housing development on The Old Blackburnians Memorial Ground, off Lammack Road.

A spokesman for Blackburn with Darwen Council said that the authority is undertaking a traffic count survey and separate speed survey within the next six to eight weeks to evaluate the area.

But residents have said that action is needed sooner.

Alan Sumner, 65, who lives on Lammack Road and uses a wheelchair, said: “It’s good they are doing something but all we need is for someone to come down for a few days and see what it’s like.

“Six to eight weeks for a few surveys is far too long and action is needed sooner rather than later as they could be starting building on the development soon.

"The council response in the Telegraph to our concerns was non-existent. They didn’t even acknowledge the speeding concerns and our calls for traffic calming measures.

“We have to put up with cars flying down this road and it’s really dangerous.

“This planned development of 59 houses will add potentially 118 cars to the road and make the problem worse, so traffic calming measures such as speed bumps are needed.”

Tommy Temperley, 57, who also lives on Lammack Road, said the council were ‘brushing residents’ concerns under the carpet’.

He said: “The planned development with the extra traffic will make the problems worse. Speeding needs to be addressed and I’d like to see sleeping policemen installed on the road to slow traffic down.

"You’ve got them on Granville Road, Earl Street, Leamington Road, everywhere in Blackburn, and we need them here before there is a fatality. The council currently are brushing our concerns under the carpet.”

Steve Catterall, from Wilpshire, who is a friend of Mr Sumner’s, added: “A lot of residents on Lammack Road have had problems with speeding. Alan is a friend of mine and it would have been good for the council to at least come and see him rather than disregard his concerns.”
