Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) are recruiting for new firefighters, with expressions of interest now open.

GMFRS are inviting aspiring firefighters to express their interest ahead of their next recruitment drive which goes live in December.

Applicants will then be invited to taster days throughout November and December.

Potential firefighters attending a taster day will be given the chance to experience what it is like to be a firefighter, meet some firefighters and undertake some role-related tests which will allow participants to gain awareness of the physical fitness requirements and the functional skills required to progress in the process.

GMFRS staff will also be visiting venues across Greater Manchester, including gyms and, to raise awareness of the recruitment drive and attract individuals who may not have previously considered a career as a firefighter.

Chief Fire Officer, Jim Wallace said: “Over the last few years we have been recruiting and training new firefighters through our Apprenticeship Programme, we are now delighted to be launching our next firefighter recruitment drive.

“We want to encourage people who are passionate about keeping the people of Greater Manchester safe to express their interest in becoming a firefighter, no matter their age, sexuality, gender or ethnicity.”

Firefighter Jayne Jeffery said: “I’ve been with the service now for 18 years, when I get asked what I do for a living I feel extremely proud to say I am a firefighter.

“There are so many benefits to being a firefighter, particularly the shift patterns, which means I get to spend more time with my young family. I would recommend anyone considering a career as a firefighter to go for it, it takes a certain type of person to be a firefighter but that person could be you!”
