A GENEROUS 90-year-old suffering from an incurable cancer celebrated her birthday by donating more than £2000 to a hospital charity.

Gwendoline Rawstron, from Blackburn, asked family and friends to make a donation to the ELHT&Me, East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust's official charity, for her 90th birthday celebration.

Mrs Rawstron has multiple myeloma, an untreatable bone marrow cancer.

To thank the staff for her continuous care, Mrs Rawstron asked people to donate to the charity instead of buying her gifts.

Mrs Rawstron said: "I'd like to thank everyone at Kingsway Court, St Luke's and St. Philip's Church and The Woodlands and Kingsway United Reformed Churches, who purchased raffle tickets, ad helped to sell them too.

"I'd also like to say a huge thank you to all the doctors and nursing staff at the Chemotherapy Unit, who have cared for me so well.

"I'd like the money raised to help the staff provide great care for patients in the future, just like I receive."

The birthday party was held at Kingsway Court, an extra care centre on Montague Street in Blackburn, and was attended by 70 people.

A buffet was held later at Luke and St. Phillip's Church on Bank Top, while family and friends joined Mrs Rawstron for a celebration meal in Ribchester.
