THE good people of Bolton and many of the area’s landlords, it would appear, are dog lovers.

We asked you to recommend the best dog-friendly pubs in and round Bolton and we have been inundated with suggestions where pooches and pints are welcome in equal measure.

Here we feature five of the most popular from the number of suggestions we received. As with all of our Five Things ... features, this is not meant to be a definitive list.

Beer School, Market Street, Westhoughton

Canine clientele are more than welcome at this micro-brewery which had more recommendations than any other establishment in our non scientific poll. “They do not just let dogs in ....they actually encourage it,” said one reviewer, adding: “The staff make a fuss of all the dogs in there. I sometimes think that mine would rather go in their than go on the park.” Another added: “ The dogs seem to enjoy the atmosphere as much as their owners. Waggy Tails and free biscuits abound.”

Top Bull, Bury New Road, Breightmet

Another firm favourite among the dog-owning fraternity who were quick to praise this popular local.

“Can’t beat the Top Bull,” was one recommendation. “Never seen a pub so dog friendly. There’s a drink available for them and always treats waiting behind the bar.

“The dogs are more welcome than the customers,” joked another.

The Railway, Chapeltown Road, Bromley Cross

ANOTHER establishment that positively encourages dog owners to take their pets along with them. The pub - with its quirky and nicely done railway-themed interior - is currently urging regulars to vote for it in the Dog Friendly Pub of the Year Awards.

As well as a wide variety of ales and a hugely popular menu owners report that there are also doggy treats available for their four-legged friends.

Chetham Arms, High Street, Chapeltown

VERY much a dog-friendly establishment, the Chetham Arms attracted a lot of love from pet owners.

“It’s always full of dogs and they keep treats behind the bar for them,” said one regular. Your pets can even join you for a drink as water is available for canine companions.

There is also a dog free dining area for customers who perhaps may not be dog lovers themselves.

“A popular place for walkers (and their dogs),” was one of the comment we received.

“It is really dog friendly,” was another.

Rosehill Tavern, Westhoughton

THE Rosehill Tavern comes highly recommended by a number of our dog owing correspondents.

The Joseph Holt’s pub s very much at the heart of the community with regular live music and even karaoke.

“The Rosehill Tavern loves dogs,” said one reviewer. “They have their own rescue dog Bryan.”
