A TOWN centre play area and mini golf course has announced its closure – citing an increase in costs combined with a reduction in the number of visitors.

Amazonia and Lost Valley Golf was based in The Vaults at Market Place Shopping Centre.

Rumours first started to swirl on Sunday September 15, when the play area posted on its Facebook page that it would be closed for the day.

A sign was also put up on a board outside the complex, which read: “Due to unforeseen circumstances we will be closed today. Sorry for any inconvenience.”

Owners MHM Leisure Ltd have now spoken out publicly for the first time since the notice was put up, to confirm the company has ceased trading.

They blamed increased in operating costs along with reduced footfall at the shopping centre.

A spokesman said: “MHM Leisure Ltd, which operated the Amazonia soft play facility in the Market Place shopping centre in Bolton, has unfortunately had to close.

“The owners, who have run the business since January 2017, have been struggling with the sharp increases in the operating costs at the same time as a reduction in customer footfall at the centre.

“They have been propping up the business financially and with the support of the landlord they have tried to do everything they could to keep the play centre open and preserve the jobs of its workforce. Sadly, that just became untenable and there was no other option for the company than to cease trading.

“The owners would like to thank their staff for their hard work, and all of the families who have visited us over the past three years.

“We are heartbroken with the situation and have invested a huge amount both financially and emotionally trying to create a fun and exciting experience for the families of Bolton.”

Nikki Wilson Cook, centre manager, said: "We can confirm that unfortunately Amazonia has ceased trading at Market Place.

"In spite of both parties working closely together to make this leisure offer a success, Amazonia was unable to continue in business.

"However, the centre’s management and leasing teams are working hard to replace this leisure offer as quickly as they can. Updates will be shared as soon as possible.”
