A MURDER investigation has been launched following the death of a man in Haslingden.

Police said officers were called at 10.30pm on Sunday to reports of a fight outside Regent Street Working Men’s Club in the town, where a man received serious injuries.

Police have confirmed the identity of the man as Barry Tyrie, from Haslingden.

Lancashire Telegraph:

Mr Tyrie, 69, was treated at the scene by police and paramedics but later died in hospital.
Four men aged 57, 25, 30 and 31, all from Haslingden, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are in custody this evening.

Enquiries are ongoing and detectives are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident outside the club or who saw Mr Tyrie inside the establishment earlier in the evening, where it is understood he may have intervened in an argument between a man and a woman.

Stephen Youds, the working men’s club’s landlord, said he had know Mr Tyrie for 30 years.

He said: “He was a gentleman. He was well respected and was well-known in the area.

“Everyone at the pub who knew him is in complete shock. He’s come into this club for years. We’re all deeply upset.”

Mr Youds said Mr Tyrie worked in the construction industry and his work took him all over the world.

He said: “He was the type of guy who would help you out in any way he could.

“If you had an issue with your car or something like that, he would help you.

“Two people went out to help him who knew CPR and first aid, they were really quick to get out there.

“He lived up the road not to far from here too.

“He worked on some of the main roads that come through here. He worked on the bypass too.

“We’re devastated for his family.

“He usually wore a suit but because it was hot on Sunday he didn’t have one on.”

A police car remained at the scene on bank holiday Monday.

The road had been cordoned off for a few hours while officers carried out investigation work.

Detective Chief Inspector Gareth Willis said: “We need to build a picture of what has happened through Sunday evening which has led up to Barry’s tragic death.

“My thoughts first and foremost are with his family and friends at this time.

“I am particularly keen to speak to anyone who was in the club between 9.30pm and 10.20pm and who may have witnessed Barry intervening in an argument between a man and a woman and also to anyone who saw the altercation outside the club.”

Anyone with information should contact police on 101 quoting log number 1812 of August 25.
