A WOMAN caught stealing from Marks and Spencer said everything she took was for someone else except a box of chocolates which were for her.

Blackburn magistrates heard Shazia Iliyas claimed a male friend had told her to steal clothing and shoes worth a total of £187 from the Blackburn store.

Ilyiyas, 41, of Swallow Drive, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to theft from Marks and Spencer.

She was given a conditional discharge for four months and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

Philippa White, prosecuting, said a security officer watched as Iliyas went round the shop filling bags with clothing and footwear and a box of chocolates.

"She was detained as she left and said she was stealing for someone else and only the chocolates were for her," said Mrs White.

Ghaffer Khan, defending, said Iliyas had been disowned by her family after two of her children died as a result of a genetic disorder inherited from her.

"She has been befriended by a man who has not been a good influence," said Mr Khan.

"She was told what items to take by this man."
