A free festival is offering a sculpture trail hunt and a map reading course for families as part of a day of outdoor activities.

Organised by Together Housing and community enterprise company, Newground, The Active Together Walking Festival will be held at Towneley Park on Friday August 23.

Active Spaces Officer at Newground, James Kenyon said: "From tots and teens right through to more mature walkers, the walking festival offers something for everyone.

"We hope the festival will encourage people to leave the house and make the most of the green space on their doorstep.

"Walking is also a great way to spend time with the family and learn about nature."

The festival will start at 10am with a four mile walk from the War Memorial around Towneley Park and Barcroft Hall.

There is also a shorter one to two mile walk from outside the Main Hall entrance exploring Towneley Park at 11am.

For families, there is a one mile parent and children sculpture trail hunt from Offshoots at 10am.

In the afternoon, the longer walk is repeated from 1.30pm, the shorter walk from 2pm and the sculpture trail from 1.30pm.

There is also an Introduction to Map Reading course at Offshoots from 2pm.

Mr Kenyon added: "Throughout the day, there will be children’s games and activities in Offshoots and the park itself, and refreshments and lunch will be available at a small charge."
