THE community rallied round an amateur football team after they were targeted by vandals.

Yobs threw paint and smashed glass bottles at Stoneclough Football Club’s Fox Park ground last week.

It came just days after Netflix used the ground to film scenes for the upcoming series The English Game.

On Sunday, the club held a fundraising tournament featuring the under 6 team and five other clubs from around the North West.

Laura Davies, welfare officer at Stoneclough Football Club said: "It was a brilliant day. Loads of people came and we raised quite a bit of money.

"We got really lucky with the weather as well. It looked like it was going to rain at first but it was a gorgeous day."

Little Lever club Jogabola beat Stoneclough FC 2-1 in the final of the tournament.

Pennine Juniors, Moss Bank, Walshaw Warriors, and Astley and Tyldesley Tornadoes also took part.

Some of the money raised has been used to cover the cost of the paint used to cover over the vandalism.

Mrs Davies added: "I would like to say a massive thank you to all the parents and families of our team for all their help and donations and all the other teams and our community for being so kind.

"Also thank you to the managers and some parents and friends of our team who have helped all week with all the cleaning and painting they have done, to help get the club back to normal."

The club is holding another fundraising tournament on Sunday August 18.

The eight team tournament will be followed by a fun day at The Grapes Hotel.
