THE body of a man has been found in Bury town centre.

Police were called to the Whitehead Clock Tower next to Bury Town Hall at about 4.50pm on Friday to reports of an unresponsive man.

Officers attended and found a man who was pronounced dead.

There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrrounding the death of the man, who is thought to have been in his 30s.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "At about 4.50pm, officers received reports of an unresponsive man found near to the clock tower.

"Officers attended and found the body of a man believed to be in his 30s.

"There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances."

Eyewitnesses reported a heavy police presence and a cordon around the tower, which is located within Whitehead Gardens.

The scene has since been cleared.

Kristian Lewin-Petrov, who lives opposite the tower in Manchester Road, said: "There were police at every entrance to the gardens blocking it off with tape.

"It is unbelievable to think someone was found dead just over the road."

A file will be passed to the coroner's office.
