THE area surrounding a park café has been flooded due to the torrential downpour of rain in recent days.

Water has been overflowing from the canal feeder — a body of water — located at the side of The Lamppost Café in Burrs Country Park.

Over the past week, the café veranda, as well as paths at the rear and side of the building, have been flooded.

Nicola Gregson, who works at the site, posted on Facebook: "The canal feeder has burst its banks again, flooding the area to the rear of the cafe and the paths nearby to the bridges.

"Bury Council has been notified because they need to open the sluice gates to let the water into the River Irwell. The café is currently open, as long as the water doesn’t start coming under the rear terrace door."

She added: "The water has subsided lots, but we are expecting more flooding over the next day or two."

The café veranda was flooded on Tuesday.

Bury Council officials have since attended the site and carried out work to alleviate the problems.

A council spokesman said: "This flooding occurred due to the sheer volume of rain that has fallen at various times this week.

"We have cleared the grate at the end of the canal feeder and we have dug a channel adjacent to the sluice gate near the cafe to allow water to flow over it, which has helped and closed the sluice gate at the weir which has also been checked by the Canals and Rivers Trust."

Resident Dave Shaw posted on the Friends of Burrs Country Park Facebook page yesterday: "There is still far too much water in the canal feeder system.

"It is flooding into Woodhill road, and has been for at least three days now, and the footbridge across the River Irwell is now a waterfall."

Despite the heavy rain, a Saabfest event, organised by the North West branch of Saab Owners Club, was held at Burrs last weekend, with several vehicles put on display.

One resident posted on social media: "Luckily the Saab event was successful and not washed away."

While the rain is causing a fair few problems for staff and walkers, a mother duck with her family of ducklings have been spotted enjoying themselves at the weir.
