A HUGE thunderstorm kept many people awake and caused part of a historic conservatory roof to collapse.

The thunderstorm rumbled across East Lancashire at about 1am today and it is thought its impact caused the roof of the Victorian conservatory at Blackburn’s Corporation Park to partially cave in.

The Met Office has issued another yellow warning of thunderstorms for 3pm tomorrow on what is expected to be the hottest day of the year, with temperatures set to hit 32C.

A weather warning has been put in place until 4am on Friday across a large chunk of the UK with thunder most likely in the north west from 7pm to 11pm.

Meanwhile Blackburn with Darwen staff were on site at Corporation Park yesterday making the area safe with security fencing.

A council spokesman said: “Sadly, we believe that the historic conservatory in Corporation Park was struck by lightning during last night’s storm.

“Due to this, part of the roof has collapsed and we are on sight making the area safe.”

A Corporation Park Supporters Group spokesman said: “Unfortunately following the thunderstorms last night the roof of the west wing of the conservatory has fallen in.

“The council staff is there now measuring up the area for security fencing. If you are going into the park for safety reasons please keep away from the conservatory.”
