A COUNCIL has cut the grass at an overgrown children’s cycling area, to the delight of families.

Councillor Roy Davies was furious the specially-created play space in Olive Lane Park in Darwen had not been mown.

His frustration was increased by the fact nearby grass verges on Exchange Street had been carefully cut. On Wednesday, the paper highlighted the issue and, on Friday, workmen cut the grass.

Darwen East Liberal Democrat Cllr Davies said: “The council have now come and cut the grass at the cycle area, thanks to the intervention of the Lancashire Telegraph. The groundstaff have still left areas on the park that should have been cut, but at least this is a start. I do not think the cutting carried out on Friday would have been done without the story published by the Telegraph.

“I, local residents and the children now using this area are very grateful. It’s a pity the council did not act before.”

Martin Eden, Blackburn with Darwen Council’s director of environment, said: “This area has now been cut thanks to a dedicated member of our grass-cutting team as part of our scheduled summer cutting programme.

“We are really glad that children and young people feel happier playing there, especially as it is nearly the start of the school summer holidays.”
