AROUND 60 Darwen traders attended a crisis meeting to discuss the town centre road network which they claim is ruining business.

They said the £1.4m traffic scheme, aimed at improving traffic flow from the junction of Bury Street and Duckworth Street through to the Circus, was putting people off driving into town.

Andrew McAllister, chairman of the Darwen Chamber of Trade, said: "The meeting was very interesting - lots of people wanted to come.

"We had about 60 businesses represented.

"The general consensus was that people are very concerned.

"One or two wanted to go the whole hog and start again, but I think a few tweaks here and there would sort it.

"In certain areas there has been difficulty in bringing in trade but on the whole, people thought the problem was a lack of signage."
