TWO electricity cables with 133,000 volts of electricity passing through them caught fire at an old power station site.

The fire at Blackburn Road, Padiham, was very close to the River Calder.

As soon as firefighters released the cables carriying a high voltage of electricity they called workers from the National Grid.

Due to the high levels of smoke and the debris from the fire the firecrews set up operation Merlin to deal with the fire.

The steel and wooden bridge carrying two high voltage cables caught fire at 4am today.

It is unknown how the fire started.

The Environment Agency was called to oversee and give advice at the scene.

Only a small number of homes were without power as the location of the fire was near an industrial estate.
