A MAN causing a disturbance at Royal Blackburn Hospital threatened to stab people with a pen.

Blackburn magistrates heard John Paul Maybury was warned about his conduct when police arrived but continued to shout abuse and was arrested.

Maybury, 27, of Cleveleys Road, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly. He was fined £150 with £85 costs and £35 victim surcharge.

Alex Mann, prosecuting, said police were called to the hospital to assist staff at about 10.30pm.

"The defendant was making a nuisance of himself, making threats to staff and members of the public," said Mrs Mann.

"He was clearly intoxicated and threatened to stab people with a pen."

Maybury, who was not represented, said he had been trying to engage with Inspire, the drink and drug agency, and the mental health team.

"I understand, with hindsight, I shouldn't have gone to the hospital while I was intoxicated," said Maybury.
