AMBITIOUS plans to transform Accrington are being put into place by a team of expert regeneration specialists.

Hyndburn Council has contracted Manchester-based planners URBED to look at public spaces, transport routes, parking and other aspects of the central area.

And their "masterplan" for the future of the area is expected to be unveiled in the next few weeks.

Council leader Peter Britcliffe said among the the recommenda-tions from the company include relocating Accrington bus station to Crawshaw Street and creating a "Pennine Square" in its place in Peel Street.

It is also hope a range of highway improvements will improve access to the town centre and there will be improvements to the main retail hub around Blackburn Road, Broadway and the Arndale Centre as well as the Market Hall and Town Hall.

Coun Britcliffe said: "URBED will help the council develop a new vision for Accrington.

"The town centre has immense potential, but we need expert help in shaping what it should look like over the next 10 to 15 years and how to make this happen.

"The final recommendations for the masterplan will be brought to the cabinet in the New Year." URBED director David Rudlin said: "We see Accrington as a real gem. Its architecture and culture are more than a match for many far bigger towns.

"With Pennine countryside on the doorstep, and assets like the Haworth Art Gallery and the historic market, the quality of life is excellent."

He said the aim was to reinforce Accrington's revival as a thriving market town, and lift its status across the region.

Although there is no specific pot of money attached to the plan, a number of ambitious projects are already in the pipeline.

Investment is in the offing from the county council for a new bus interchange and a £1million refurbishment of Accrington market hall has been announced.
