A CHILDREN’s zip wire in Bolton’s largest park has been stolen — for the third time — forcing councillors to consider whether it is worth replacing again.

The fun piece of equipment was first installed in 2007 after children drew up plans for a play area in Leverhulme Park.

But the wire has been stolen, it's believed, for its scrap value.

Yesterday ward councillors visited the park which borders Breightmet and Darcy Lever to discuss the future of the play area.

Cllr Sean Hornby:”This is the third time it has happened. It is annoying when this happens because this was something the children had asked for.

"It costs £1,600 to replace the wire and we have been told that there is no alternative material that can be used.”

He added: “There is a zip wire in Little Lever which is very popular with children.”

Now Cllr Hornby with fellow councillors are considering reinvesting the money they would have spent on the wire from area forums funds into new theft and vandal proof equipment.

“The play area is looking a bit tired and I think we need to look at the bigger picture,” he said. "We consulted with young people about what they wanted in the play area last time and we want to do that again. If children have ownership over something then they look after it.”

Children with ideas are asked to pass them on.
